I thought the easiest way to start my VA business was just to do the things I did in my previous 9-to-5s. I was a back-office employee most of my life, so I knew a lot about admin. But that wasn’t the only thing I offered; I also offered social media planning, creating graphics, and a bunch of other stuff.
Diversify, right? The wider the net, the more you can catch.
This is a good strategy for fish, but not for signing clients.
I found that out the hard way. It was hard for me to sign clients because I was a generalist. I signed my first client after 3 months.
I did a project for her, so after I finished, I had no client anymore.
I was back to square one and had to find a new client. This was super stressful.
Although I knew deep down that I had made the right decision to start my own business,
doubt crept in when there was no money coming in.
I was working 24/7 to find new clients, and that was not why I started my business. I wanted more freedom, not less.
When I signed my second client and pivoted to become a Tech & Ops VA, things changed.
She wanted to work with me on retainer, and wow, did that shift everything for me.
That’s what I wanted.
Now, I work with 5 clients, because I charge 4-figures a month on retainer,
